Young Life Established: 2009

Colombia is home to almost 46 million people.  Its cultural landscape finds roots in Native American, European, African and Caribbean influences. According to a 2009 study, 46 percent of the population lives below the poverty line.

Joaquín Villena established Young Life in 2009. He first met the Lord through Young Life in Peru. After attending seminary, he became a pastor and spent years earning the right to be heard in the communities of Bogotá. The first Young Life leaders were kids from his church whom Joaquín released as missionaries into the communities.

Today, Alejandro and Andrea Maldonado have undertaken the effort to further develop that first group of leaders and help them recruit their friends and peers. Joaquín still pastors his church and remains an active mentor over all Young Life's efforts in Bogotá. Together, the team has created a firm foundation on which to continue an exciting and growing effort.
